HIS BELOVED SON

Matthew 3:13-17

Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, “I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?”

But Jesus answered and said to him, “Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed Him.

When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Personal challenge

Why was it necessary for Jesus to be baptized if He was fully God? If He had never sinned then why be baptized? I am sure that there are many out there that can answer these questions much better than I can, but here are some of the things that I have learned along the way. Jesus was also fully man and by following in the-steps of so many others that were baptized to repent of their sins, Jesus solidified the sacrament of baptism as an important part of the Church. It was not that He had sins that needed to be cleansed of, but by His submitting to John to be baptized, He made baptism and the waters used in baptism holy and righteous for everyone else. Another reason that presents itself is that in His incarnation He made it possible for people to become Holy and to receive eternal life. By His baptism, He purified creation and blessed it to return to its created state before the fall. God entered creation and blessed it through our Lord Jesus Christ. Glory be to God!
